On the mat, a Hatha yoga practice combined with a healthy diet and rest, can lend to a sound, sustainable body. When coupled with the ancient, mental trainings we can transform the exercise into something beyond our bodily experience. It can actually inspire us to extend our practice of personal wellness to global wellness and awareness.
That's the encouragement I like offering at my Park Slope, Brooklyn yoga studio. If a practitioner feels ready to take their practice off of the mat into their community, there are so many opportunities and I make sure to share them.
350.org Work Parties, All Work, All Play
One very big opportunity is 350.org's worldwide Work Parties taking place this Sunday -- 10.10.10. Concerned citizens stoked to continue the fight against climate change will be congregating to champion solutions like installing solar panels, organizing community bike repair events, and climate legislation letter writing.
Virya + Mudita, Off the Mat
I love that in this particular event, there's as much emphasis on partying and play as there is work. Amidst all of the enthusiastic effort, "virya" in Sanskrit, there will be a healthy dose of joy, "mudita" in Sanskrit going down-- as greenie worker bees simultaneously enjoy snacks, libations with like-minded friends and neighbors. This "virya" and "mudita" that we cultivate on the mat, plays an integral part to these work parties. For us yoga practitioners, it should be easy to join in the fun -- working and partying hard!
