Green Community | Politics | Take Action

Politicians aren't really beloved in America until long after they are dead. We try and like politicians, but they seem to be reminiscent of that kid in grade school who always reminded the teacher to assign us homework.

Every couple of years, the populace has to hold our collective noses and decide what the lesser of two evils actually is. And as much as our nation's elderly resist it, things slowly and awkwardly change course like a shopping cart with three bad wheels. Although our political system does seem to favor lobbyists and big corporations, we have just as much power. It's just harder for us to utilize. Most of us can't afford personal lobbyists. That's why it's our responsibility to make ourselves heard when we can. The internet, not a series of tubes, can be a great equalizer.

Green living is quite a popular topic among fine, modern gentlemen and ladies, and even the unlikeliest of candidates are at least putting forth an effort to appear green. Politicians are all about appeasing the polloi, and if pressured enough, they might actually make a difference.

Make your voice heard. Take an active role in politics. Even if you don't have time to go door to door or to be a part of any grassroots organizations, you can still write your congressperson and demand change. Ask them to push for bills that increase the usage of renewable resources and that raise emissions standards. Demand more recycling programs, a better education for your children and healthier food in school lunch rooms. Demand it! This is still a democracy, and you are responsible to maintain a government that is by you, of you and for you.

Need proof that it's possible to balance being green and still be a supportive partner and parent? See how Ed Begley, Jr. does it on Planet Green TV's Living with Ed.
