Did you know that you could build a twelve-foot high wall from New York to Los Angeles using the paper consumed in a year? Did you know that a wall like that would be very hard to maintain? Did you know that wind, rain and vandals would destroy that wall in less than a month? Did you know that the wall is only hypothetical and used to illustrate the severity of our paper wastage? Did you know that you can do something about that hypothetical wall?
A massive continent-splitting paper wall may be the stuff of fever dreams, but it is high time that we set some boundaries for ourselves. We need to be certain not to waste paper. Here are a few paper-saving tips for the home or office:
- Install an electronic fax program. Why buy fax paper when you can have faxes sent right to your email in PDF format?
- Have yourself removed from mass junk-mailing lists.
- Use both sides of the paper, like all my English teachers used to do.
- Use newspapers to clean glass instead of paper towels, then recycled your newspapers.
- Don't use paper towels at all. Use a cloth towel.
