Is it just me, or is there something really gratifying about casting a vote on Election Day? Maybe my sense of satisfaction feels even greater this morning because I actually, like, studied each candidate running and picked my favorites. I avoided the temptation to vote down party lines as I have done in years past. (I know, I know -- what a novel idea!)
After a warming breakfast (it's chilly here in New York City!), I bundled up and made my way down to my district vote center to try out the new bubble vote system. If I hadn't studied the candidates ahead of time, I would have felt like I was back in final exam season during my school days. Fumbling through multiple choice, using clues like party lines and people's names (oh, that guy sounds progressive!) to get me by. Hey, at least I voted.
Project Vote Smart
This campaign season, I was ready for more and a handy little website called Project Vote Smart made research painless and fast. I just plugged in my state and it pulled up all of the running candidates--from Senator, to Governor, Attorney General to Comptroller, and more. Brief biographical information was given for each name tho I ran a web search for names I didn't recognize to pull up their campaign sites, news articles, and other in-depth info that helped me decide whether I liked their agenda or not. It must not have taken me any longer than 20 minutes!
Most polls are open until the evening. Here in NY, until 9pm. You still have time dear citizens to do a little candidate research, partake in your civic duty and then bask in the post-vote pride! It feels good.
