You may have seen the blue and white Energy Star logo before on ads or certain appliances, and brushed it off as some sort of electric company—we did. But it's worth getting to know Energy Star—in reality, it's a joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. And this is one government program that's actually seeing some results—by encouraging the use of energy efficient appliances for homes and businesses, Energy Star has helped drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions and electricity bills nationwide.

The program would be worthy for the helpful home eco-improvement feature on its website alone; it provides a list of stellar pointers and eco-friendly practices. Energy star even has a podcast.

But in addition to being informative, Energy Star provides a certification process for energy efficient appliances and goods—a great help to green-minded consumers.

For a full list of all of Energy Star's operations, check out its extremely informative website. And think twice before you say there's nothing green about the government.
