Your home isn't the only place in need of clutter control. Corporate America is mess, quite literally, according to an October 2007 survey by CableOrganizer.com. A staggering 93 percent of business professionals rated their workspaces as "cluttered" to some degree, while 8 percent of respondents confessed that their desks were "always cluttered."

More notably, more than a quarter of respondents admitted that their workspaces were so cluttered it impeded productivity. Another 11 percent asked "what work space?," because they couldn't find their way through the chaos. But an untidy desk can have negative implications beyond aesthetics, the survey revealed. The majority of respondents (64 percent) acknowledged that their "emotional state in the office" was "closely tied" to the condition of their workspace. (Two-thirds of respondents concurred that no, their mother would not be proud of how they kept their desks.)

A prodigious 90 percent of respondents indicated that they were adversely impacted by a cluttered workspace, feeling "disorganized and incompetent" (48 percent), "anxious and frantic," (22 percent), "embarrassed and self-conscious" (14 percent), or even "downright depressed" (6 percent). More than one-third of respondents agreed than an organized desk made them feel more productive.

The biggest contributor of clutter? "Paper and files," according to 50 percent of respondents. One-third (35 percent) experienced a combination of paperwork, cable and wiring, along with other types of clutter such as "knick knacks and decor items," "office supplies," and miscellaneous "equipment and gear." ::CableOrganizer.com (PDF)

If you're drowning in documentation, here are some ways to curb your paper trail:

1. Reduce paper use: Nip the problem in the bud by sending memos and meeting notes via e-mail, rather making printed copies.

2. Print on both sides of the sheet: If doing this manually is a hassle, consider investing in a printer with automatic duplexing.

3. Narrow your word-document margins: You'll be able to squeeze more text per page, reducing the amount of paper you'll need.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
