Not everyone does Christmas-a large percentage of our population celebrates other holidays. When I was a kid, Christmas was the best day of the year to see movies and eat Chinese food, and it became a family tradition. But what are the greener things one can do?
1. Get outside: Hiking paths, skating rinks, recreation areas will all be less crowded than usual.
2. Job share: A fellow employee may be forced to work C-day; can you offer to take their place?
3. Help out: Nursing and retirement homes may be short-staffed on a day when many shut-ins are being visited, and many others are lonely. Volunteer for the day. In the United Kingdom, over 6500 people volunteered last year to help out with Crisis Open Christmas, noting "If you are homeless or living in hostel accommodation, Christmas can be a lonely and depressing time."
4. Serve dinner: Many shelters and kitchens are serving Christmas dinners-you are not missing one, go help serve.
5. Go to the movies: But make it The 11th Hour.
Difficulty level: Easy
