We've talked a bit about touring and how important it is that musicians green up their acts while on the road. From fuel emissions to trash cans filled with empty water bottles each night after the show, an eco-minded musician can make a world of difference on a tour with some initiative. As a concert-goer, it's important that you know which upcoming tours and festivals you can support with a clean and green conscience. I'm going to help you figure that out.
On a perhaps selfish note, I'm starting this section up with Radiohead—selfish because I think they're one of the greatest bands of the last decade (or two). Whether you agree or disagree, there are eco-reasons to go support this band while they're on tour. Radiohead make sure their tour-mates all use tour water flasks. A band that opened for them last year, Liars, reported on their Myspace, "Plastic anything is like contraband. Every bus and truck runs on biofuel. There is no idling, rather some new-fangled way to deliver electricity cleanly. They don't do airfreight, either. The list goes on. Everything is supremely managed to reduce the 'footprint'".
Unfortunately, Radiohead's dates aren't widespread right now, but they are making some festival appearances at festivals that also have an eco-conscience. The Frequency Festival, for instance, which they play on August 21st in St. Polten, Austria, not only has a green stage, but they moved the festival to St. Polten this year from Salzburg solely because of the ecological possibilities St. Polten held over Salzburg.
Although Radiohead's dates are scattered right now, take a mental note of this band's green initiatives. I'm no prophet, but I think it's safe to say they'll be touring the rest of the world sooner than later.
