It's a bold move to give any percentage of your proceeds away right now—in case you hadn't heard, there's a bit of a global recession going on at the moment. So businesses that are going ahead and continuing to contribute 1% of their profits to environmental causes should be applauded—and supported.
One Percent for the Planet is, as its website puts it, a "growing global movement of 1,114 companies that donate 1% of their sales to a network of 1,726 environmental organizations worldwide."
Sounds like a good deal—and it is. Participating business run the gamut from huge clothing corporations (like Barney's) to independent record labels to small eco-boutiques. Authors, photographers, and publishers also make up some of the businesses too. To see which companies are members, you can do a quick search at the organization's website.
Take a peek at all the non-profits involved, too—they cover a wide swath of issues, from bat conservation to fishery initiatives to renewable energy advocates.
Point is, 1% for the Planet is an all around good deal—support companies that support greening the world they do business in.
