All too often, I see a social crime taking place via the workplace: anti-green influence. The culprits normally don't even realize they're influencing others badly. They're your work buddies who insist on regular steak dinners. They're your girlfriends at the office who think fake nails should be a weekly application. They're your managers who like to print off as many items as possible.
Take a minute to examine your own workplace. Are you influencing others greenly or not? It really doesn't take much more than a bit of effort to make a substantial influence in a workplace. Here are some subtle things you can do to combat common anti-green workplace behavior without seeming obnoxious, but still being a good influence yourself.
- When the guys want to go out for steak, go with them, but make a point to order something healthier and more eco-friendly.
- When the girls insist on getting fake nails frequently, tell them you would rather not, but invite them over for a green dinner one night.
- When a manager dirties the workplace with tons of paper that no one seems to be using, collect it yourself to use as scrap paper instead of filling up yet another notebook.
Being green shouldn't be snobby and you'll influence the people at your workplace more efficiently by being subtle. Actions speak louder than words, right?
