It would be fair if you didn't take Stephen Colbert seriously when he pledged to spend a day laboring in a field as part of United Farm Workers' Take Our Jobs campaign.

But he did it, and it is sure to be part of his testimony in front of Congress on Friday.

His testimony—called "Protecting America's Harvest"—will talk about the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits and Security Act, or AgJOBS bill, which would help illegal immigrants become legal if they work on American farms.

That is precisely the focus of the Take Our Jobs campaign, which invites people to take the hard labor jobs currently held by undocumented workers.

(Only seven people have taken United Farm Workers up on the offer. The lack of interest isn't surprising, but it does seem to put a hole in the anti-illegal immigrant argument.)

Watch the Colbert Report this week to see Colbert's day of work on a corn and vegetable farm.

Friday's testimony won't be Colbert's last political appearance: he and Jon Stewart will be holding a Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington, DC next month.
