We’d rather you brew your own coffee to save gas, money and disposable cup waste but if you find yourself in a java-less jam—this week’s the best for making a pit stop at Starbucks.

We caught wind that starting today, the coffee company, in partnership with the HandsOn Network, is giving out a free tall cup of joe to every patron that pledges five hours of time to community service in 2009. Their hope is that the initiative will inspire the public to continue participation in President Obama’s call to service.

After customers take the pledge, they can visit pledge5.force.com to find a community service project of choice like community cleanuptree plantingsurban gardening and more.

The major coffee chain that recently faced tough financial times this past summer, must be getting the hint that putting the planet and people before profit is the key to success.

After all, who doesn’t like their coffee brewed with a little compassion?

Stop into a participating Starbucks between now and January 25, 2009 to make your pledge.
