I admit it. Though I would never do it now, I am nostalgic for the days when my friends and I would pass around those cute, little store-bought Valentine's Day cards complete with conversation hearts.
But now, with wasteful virgin-forest sourced paper card days behind me and a personal boycott on all things corn syrup-derived, I have to appreciate any un-commercial spin on Valentine's Day—a holiday I actually happen to like.
That's why I'm loving Etsy’s (the go-to website for all-things-craft-related) Special Delivery project. To celebrate this year’s Valentine's Day, they’re teaming up with Citymeals-on-Wheels to deliver nutritious meals and handmade greeting cards to homebound elderly New Yorkers. It's refreshing to see that they’re making the day more about community service than consumption.
Their aim is to collect 18,000 hand-crafted greeting cards—one for each person that Citymeals services. And as you can imagine, they need as many entries as possible to help hit their goal.
If you'd like contribute a heart-felt greeting, be sure to craft yours with eco-consciousness by making new cards with old cards and using eco-friendly materials like paper scraps, post-consumer recycled paper, non-toxic glue and markers and other reusable odds and ends that you already have lying around the house.
The goal should be about not having to purchase anything to create a meaningful memory for someone.
Giving a loved one a green greeting card on Valentine's Day is thoughtful. Sending one to a complete stranger on the other hand, is just plain compassionate. ::Etsy
