Discovery Education

This isn’t the first time we’ve written about the Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education and National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge—the contest encouraging middle schoolers to design actionable green solutions for their local communities.

In fact, we’ve been following it all along, from its early conception to its call for entrants. But today, almost one year from its launch, and with over 2,000 entrants in the mix, 22 state finalists have been announced and each awarded an eco-friendly prize pack including a recycled messenger bag, a solar charger, a recycled USB drive, a recycled journal, a reusable water bottle and other low-impact supplies.
We’re pretty sure the pint-sized sustainable whiz-kids are excited to get their paws on the fancy green loot but we’re more excited to see such important and impressive ideas from such young minds. Here is a shortlist of the 22 state finalist teams and their prize-worthy projects that might even have us grown-ups inspired to put on our eco-thinking caps:

  • “Bruce/Kennedy” from Greenwich, CT: Reducing paper use at school
  • “Cows with Guns” from Bozeman, MT: Reducing effects of gas emitted from beef farming
  • “Educate Them and They Will” from Norwood, MA: School recycling program and competition
  • “Environmental Nutrition Mission” from Minden, NV: School recycling/nutrition program
  • “E-Waste Girls” from Levittown, NY: Proper disposal of electronic waste
  • “Fireflies” from Holladay, UT: Educate about advantages compact florescent light bulbs
  • “Little Reds” from Las Cruces, NM: Awareness and education about reintroduction of the Mexican gray wolf
  • “Milburn Mustangs” from Short Hills, NJ: Negative effects of non-native Norway Maple tree on community ecosystem
  • “Picture This” from Bellaire, TX: Organized environmental student film festival
  • “Plan B” from Appleton, WI: Use of rain barrels to collect rain water
  • “Stewards of the Pamlico Sound” from Buxton, NC: Restore oyster population in Pamlico Sound
  • “Styrofoam Blasters” from Corbin, KY: Eliminate use of Styrofoam trays in school cafeteria

Selecting a single finalist from this long list of eco-mindful middle schoolers won’t be easy but only one grand prize winner will walk away with the complete package including an appearance on Planet Green and a once-in-a-lifetime Discovery Adventure Trip, accompanied by a Discovery TV star. Cool!

Stay tuned to find out which two national winning teams and one grand prize-winning team will be chosen and announced on May 18.
