When a couple gets engaged, it is (usually) a joyous moment. Pop the champagne! Hug your friends! Kiss each other!
But after the fanfare dies down, a harsh reality settles in. And typically, this reality takes the form of a question: How in the world will we pay for this?
I'd like you to meet Andrea Parrish and Peter Geyer. An engaged couple in Spokane, Wash., and the co-founders of WeddingCans.com. Rather than wring their hands over funds they didn't have, Andrea and Peter came up with an eco-friendly, and wallet-friendly, solution. They'd pay for their wedding with recycled aluminum cans.
"Our relationship has been a bit off kilter from the beginning, and why should our wedding be any different?" says the couple on their website. "We're shooting for 400,000 aluminum cans - approximately 5 tons of empty cans. We would like to get married on July 31 - which gives us 7 months to hit the goal."
Isn't this ingenious? We thought so, too.
If you live in the Spokane area, you can help out Andrea and Peter by taking your cans to one of the designated drop-off centers. You can even contact them via the website, and they'll come pick them up directly.
If you don't live in Spokane, don't worry. Simply recycle your cans at your local center, then visit the PayPal link on WeddingCans.com to funnel through your donation.
Want a little more inspiration? Three years ago, 54 billion cans were recycled, saving the energy equivalent of 15 million barrels of crude oil - in other words, America's entire gas consumption for one day. By helping to break that record in 2010, you can help make one couple's day pretty special.
