Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President Bill Clinton, and oodles of celebrities joined this week to launch MASSIVEGOOD, a pretty exciting new program that enables travelers to make "micro-contributions" to global health causes whenever they purchase a plane ticket, reserve a hotel room or rent a car.
MASSIVEGOOD has the potential to raise millions, maybe billions, of dollars for global health issues including malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, childhood mortality, and maternal health. The initiative has the backing of will.i.am., David Guetta, South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and Spike Lee, who directed a 60-second film short (watch below) for the MASSIVEGOOD launch in New York. The film features Samuel L. Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Susan Sarandon, and author Paul Auster.
UNITAID will receive and then distribute the funds to partners, including the Clinton Health Access Initiative, in this new mechanism that is expected to make significant strides in reaching some of the health-related Millennium Development Goals—which themselves are controversial at best, but surely global health is not.
Check out the video, and if you're traveling anytime soon, consider what an extra $2 can do.
