Getting your colleagues to care as much about nature as you do isn't always easy...especially if you live in a big city like New York. I've spent lots of time here in New York trying to get colleagues on board with my enthusiasm for recycling or even hiking, but it's never easy in a concrete jungle. I work from home these days, but there is something I wish I had done when I was back in an office that I encourage you to do now if you want your colleagues to appreciate nature the way that you do:
Plan outdoorsy events.
You don't have to call it a 'group' (groups can sometimes make outsiders feel excluded), but make plans to be outside nonetheless. Help orchestrate travel plans for every kind of outdoorsy event you can think of. Snowboarding, hiking, beach trips, rock climbing, caving...the world is your canvas!
Why this is important: A fundamental reason to be green is because you have an appreciation for the planet. If your colleagues aren't as green as you'd like for them to be, the root of that could easily be an ignorance to the wonders of nature (or a failure to pay attention to them). By exposing your colleagues to all of the beauties this planet has to offer in a fun way, I guarantee you that certain changes will start to occur. Just think, who wants to go to a beach with trash in the sand? Who wants to see forests destroyed if they love being in the forest?
Planning events like these will help to get everyone at your workplace on board with a green initiative. Try it!
