Even if you're doing everything you possibly can to buy local—you patronize your local brick and mortar stores, visit the local farmers market to pick up the best seasonal produce, and walk or bike to these places—I'd bet you still end up ordering some things online.

Even though I live in New York City and walk to do the majority of my shopping, there are still occasionally things that I get shipped to me. Want to offset the emissions of shipping those things? GreenShipping.com comes to the rescue:

Enter in your UPS, FedEx or USPS tracking number (whether you shipping the package or are receiving it) and their carbon calculator will figure out the emissions produced in shipping your package. Pay a small offset fee and, voila, the shipping of that package becomes de facto carbon neutral.

You can even set up your account so all your online purchase shipments are automatically offset.

If you're a business owner and want to offset the emissions of all your shipments, a similar automatic offset program exists.

The offsets used by GreenShipping are through Bonneville Environmental Foundation and have met the stringent environmental criteria of the NRDC.
