This morning, the White House plans to acknowledge Discovery Communications' commitment to furthering science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. The company, of which Planet Green is a part, will announce a new block of programming, educational curriculum, and tools to help foster excellence and develop new careers in these fields.
President Barack Obama said:
| Lifting American students from the middle to the top of the pack in STEM achievement over the next decade will not be attained by government alone...I applaud the substantial commitments made today by the leaders of companies, universities, foundations, non-profits and organizations representing millions of scientists, engineers and teachers from across the country. |
Making STEM education entertaining and fun is essential to building student interest. John Hendricks, the founder and chairman of Discovery Communications, explained that this new initiative "will spark the innate curiosity in school-aged viewers and people of all ages, help drive interest and leadership in science-related careers and inspire a lifelong interest in how science shapes our everyday lives."
The Science Channel, in partnership with Discovery Education and DirecTV, will lead the company's efforts by featuring an advertising free science-themed programming block Monday through Saturday. Other efforts will include PSAs, special events and competitions to get students involved, and research studies to assess media's role in encouraging students to pursue STEM education.
President Barack Obama will speak on the importance of STEM education and recognize the efforts of Discovery Communications at a special event to be held at the White House today. Guests will include John Hendricks and MythBusters hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman.
You can watch the event, happening November 23 at 11:45 am (Eastern time), online at the White House Live, or via Facebook:
