The front page story in the December 30, 2009 edition of AM-NY declared:
New Yorkers resolve to make city cleaner, greener and more polite
Some of the 2010 resolutions included:
- "Be gentler on the environment. ... Doing your part to help make the world a little greener can start with simple things such as recycling."
- "Outlaw nonrecyclable plastics: We have the power of numbers. If NYC says 'no' to non-recyclables, producers will listen."
- "Grow more trees and grow more plants. It makes the city nicer and makes the air fresher."
And this one from a six-year-old:
"Clean up because people throw garbage everywhere and it makes the city stinky."

From the Battery to The Bronx, the green message has caught on but (and you knew there'd be a "but")...recycling, outlawing plastics, growing trees, doing the anti-stinky thing are not gonna do the job alone. As Paul Hawken sez:
"Really going green, means having less. It does mean less. Everyone is saying, 'You don't have to change your lifestyle.' Well, yes, actually, you do."
Hey New York, Can You Spare Some Change?
- Recognize that our beloved way of life is not, has never been, and will can never be "sustainable."
- Take a personal green inventory and replace hope with action
- Connect with your fellow activists
- Remember: There are good reasons to be afraid. There are better reasons to be bold.
