A lot of people like live music. And when a lot of people like something that happens live, a lot of people come out to see it happen. And a lot of people in one place often means trash and not-so-green behavior, hence why festivals have been such an eco-nightmare in the past. Luckily, many festivals are pulling up their sleeves and digging into the problem so that we can all enjoy things like live music together without having to leave a nasty eco-footprint. Lollapalooza is one of these festivals.

Lollapalooza will be held in Chicago, as usual, this summer from August 7-9. With headlining acts like Jane's Addiction, The Killers, Depeche Mode, Tool, Beastie Boys, and Kings of Leon, the festival will, inevitably, pull in music fans from across the U.S. and beyond. It's important that a festival this large has some green initiatives.

How Lollapalooza Is Going Green in 2009:

  1. Green Street Exhibit: This green exhibit will feature eco-demos, sustainable merchandise, and a solar-powered stage. Vendors will be using compost-ready or biodegradable plates and the plastic bags will be corn-based. Leftover food is being donated to a local food pantry and construction materials will be recycled if not reused.

  2. Art Market: There will be an art market at the festival featuring retailers that specialize in green goods with style.

  3. Honda Insight: The 2010 Honda Insight, Honda's new hybrid, is working closely with the festival. Honda will have an 'eco zone' where the car is displayed and those volunteering to help keep Lollapalooza green will have a shot at winning the car.

  4. Offsets: Attendees have the option of buying a $5 Lollapalooza 'BeGreen' fan tag that will help each attendee offset their festival travel.

Every summer music festival out there needs the help and support of attendees in order to pull off green initiatives. If you're at Lollapalooza this August, be sure to be a part of their green scene so that the festival can continue to run their show smoothly alongside green practices next year, too.
