The residents of Greensburg were thrilled to see Kathleen Sebelius mention Greensburg's efforts to go green on her nationally televised response to the State of the Union Address. But most small towns are unlikely to get that kind of national political attention—making it tough to feel like you can make a difference on green issues if you happen to live in one.

But you can. You just have to start small. Attend town hall meetings and write to your local politicians about greening your area if you live in a smaller city—you actually have a unique opportunity to get your voice heard and considered. Urge them to implement greener policies, whether it's better recycling programs or eco-awareness raising initiatives. And check out resources like the Environmental Community Action group to find volunteer opportunities in your area. There are plenty more ways to green your community, too. Just think big, and you can help make progress—every little bit helps.
