Green celebrities are fun to gawk at but they also can make inspiring eco-examples. Whether you admire their sustainable style, the causes they support, the things they buy or their sometimes shockingly do-gooder behavior--here are five fabulous ways you can become a bit more like an eco-celeb yourself.
Make a statement
Celebrities are living proof that sustainable frocks can look fabulous. Take the 2009 Oscars for example. Green gal Natalie Portman rocked a Rodarte dress—a label that has taken sustainable steps, Anne Hathaway sported vintage Cartier gems and Penelope Cruz looked radiant in a vintage Balmain dress. If we may be so bold, we suspect that Cruz’s eco-friendly karma may have helped snag her Best Supporting Actress!
Become an eco-trendsetter yourself by finding unique vintage pieces at thrift shops and flea markets. If you prefer new clothes--set aside some cash to make a worthy investment in high quality, long-lasting threads from ethical, organic brands. Feel pleased when friends, family and co-workers admire your eco-friendly ways and super hot look.
Support a cause
We’re not sure when exactly it started, but being passionate about an environmental or humanitarian organization has never become so sexy thanks to celebrities. From Brad Pitt’s New Orleans eco-reconstruction affair to George Clooney’s fight for Darfur to Leo DiCaprio’s battle against climate change—it seems as though every celeb has their own personal mission. And it’s no surprise, given that the do-gooder mentality plus a decent publicist formula seems to land them high visibility in the public eye.
Maybe your endorsement and regular support of your favorite organization won’t land you an appearance on Oprah anytime soon but it will have others holding you in high-esteem—whether it is a future employer or your future bride/groom. So go ahead, shamelessly promote your cause—and your awesome green self!

Go organic
There’s a reason why celebrities like Jennifer Garner, Gwenyth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie swear by fresh, organic meals to keep their skin youthful and big screen-worthy. Beyond the slew of evidence as to why organic agriculture is more ecologically sound and environmentally safe for human consumption, there’s also a bit more superficial a reason to eat organic. It makes you look and feel fab! Why? Several studies reveal that organic produce has higher-nutrient content, meaning more skin-friendly antioxidants.
If the economy has you scaling back to a less-than-celebrity style budget—seek out low-cost organic food items at a local food coop, farmer’s market or CSA-program. If your limited to a supermarket, at least try to buy these seven most important organic food items.
Drive green
Pierce Brosnan was spotted rolling up to red carpet events in BMW’s Hydrogen 7, as did Cameron Diaz to this year’s Academy Awards. Pop princess Miley Cyrus also recently traded in her Porsche Cayenne SUV for a new black Prius.
But you don’t need to be a celebrity—or rich—to hitch yourself a green ride. Tons of stars are making old school bike riding look bad-ass and you can too by spiffying up your own two-wheeler or buying yourself a used one. If a sleek, hybrid car is out of the question, we also have tons of hypermiling tricks here on Planet Green so you can at least drive in eco-conscious style and class.
Think outside the boob (we mean, box)
Sometimes being green means acting from compassion. We don’t mean you necessarily have to breastfeed a baby in Niger like the noble Salma Hayek, but it does maybe mean starting to nurse the same sense of selflessness.
After all, saving the planet is more than simply dressing green, talking green, eating green and driving green. Sure, these are all important steps in the beginning as we build our green identity. But after we finish our glass of organic wine and wash away our eco-friendly make-up, where does that leave us? We’re still left with our minds and our hearts. How we ultimately view the world is what matters most and how much responsibility we take towards making it a better place—even if what it sometimes takes is something society would deem shocking or a bit controversial.
