The Boogie Down is fast becoming an eco-hotbed and it seems my recent Bronx Staycation post missed two very important suggestions. Fortunately, these have been brought to my attention (thanks JOS and Dylan) and will now be brought to your attention.
Rocking the Boat
Rocking the Boat was created in 1996 to give South Bronx students from public middle schools and high schools a chance to participate in boatbuilding and on-water hands-on environmental education. The idea, they say, is to "deal with everyday realities that are often not addressed at home or in school." Roughly 2,000 students each year get to experience first-hand their "most important local natural resource, the Bronx River, and put traditional classroom learning into direct practice." Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx)
A community organization dedicated to environmental justice, SSBx was created in 2001 to "address policy and planning issues like land use, energy, transportation, water, waste, education, and, most recently, design and manufacturing." The programs offered by SSBx are numerous and varied but you can get a small taste by taking their Toxic Tour: "Learn about the South Bronx through this unique 1.5 hour walking tour. See first hand the environmental issues a community like Hunts Point deals with each day. You will also learn about SSBx's work and our attempt at solutions that are sustainable to our environment."
