Some of the most enthusiastic green-goers in Greensburg turn out to be the high school students—their drive and dedication is inspiring both to their fellow students and the sometimes skeptical adult residents.
They make a fine example of the possibilities of teens going green. And there are plenty of ways they can make a difference—here’s a quick list of some things that any eco-interested teenager can do to blaze a green trail at their school or community. And though not all are groundbreaking moves that’ll save the world in themselves, anything you can do to get them (or yourselves) started thinking green is a big step in the right direction.
- Eat Organic – It shouldn’t be too tough for a teenager to start eating green—not only is it healthy, but it’s trendy too. Organic foods often simply taste better, sound sophisticated, and give them some one-upmanship on their fast food feasting peers. They’re still not sold? Three words: Vegan Ice Cream.
- Recycle Cell Phones – Perhaps the easiest eco-friendly move you can persuade a teenager to make is having them drop their used phones off in the recycling bins available at most electronic stores like Best Buy instead of pitching them in the trash. There are a bunch of other ways to reuse defunct cell phones, too. Seems simple, but every bit helps.
- Go Green Initiative – Over 80 schools participated in the Go Green Initiative last year. Encourage teens to talk to their schools about joining in the revolutionary movement and be part of a nationwide effort to green the U.S.
- Talk Green – Maybe the most important thing you can do is make Going green a household term. Keep the conversation open and discuss current green events with your teen. The more they think and talk green from the get go, the more they’ll act accordingly in the future.
