It's hardly controversial to say that certain teachers can be incredibly influential in how we develop our worldview. They've been called "one of the first lines of defense in the environmental movement." Yep, well beyond dangling participles and long division, today's school teachers play a crucial role in re-imagining our culture and preserving our future. For more on this life lesson, we studied up on Planet Green's "How to Go Green: School Teachers."
Top Tips for Greening Your Classroom
Calculate: There's a new primary number in town and it goes by the name of "carbon footprint." Working with students to analyze lifestyles, choices, and impact not only hones math skills, it also introduces the next generation to the role they play in creating a more sustainable future.
Leg Power: While some rural locales make getting to school an onerous task, most students can—and should—rely on walking or bicycling. It's more fun. It puts them in position to interact with friends and neighbors along the way. It's healthier for their bodies. And, oh yeah, there's the little matter of not driving.
Get Wormy: Imagine a learning environment in which composting is as normal as making up excuses for unfinished homework. Adding a touch of nature to the classroom with a worm bin or some other form of composting keeps those young minds aware of eco-systems beyond the range of their text messages.
