There's nothing sweeter than a little hard-earned time off, especially when you know you've left your workspace in great green shape. Try these simple tips before you punch out and head for your dream vacation.

  1. Shut your Blinds to Stop Leaking Heat
Leaky windows are often the biggest culprits for heat loss in a building, raising your office's energy use as precious warmth seeps from your workplace into the great outdoors. Help stop the seepage before it starts by closing any blinds or curtains in your office before you split. The extra layer of protection will help trap heat inside the building where it belongs, thereby reducing your carbon footprint. Think of it as putting a sweater on your window.

  2. Empty your Outlets to Save Electricity
Nip sneaky phantom power in the bud by flicking off your powerstrip, and unplugging everything you can from your wall sockets. Stop your computer and other workplace devices from accidentally gobbling up power while you're gone. Not only will this simple act shrink your energy usage, it'll also help prolong the lifespan of your stuff by taking a bit of the burden off for a while. In short, your powerstrip and your printer probably need a vacation almost as much as you do, so free them from the socket while you're gone.

  3. Loan it all Out to Reduce Consumption
Sharing office supplies is way green, so if there's anything in your workspace that might be useful to a colleague while you're gone, like a stapler or other workplace goodies, make sure your coworker gets the swag before you lock your door. You'll reduce your office's overall consumer impact, and strengthen your work relationships along the way. If you're loaning out a bunch of stuff and are worried about making sure you remember who has what, just jot down a quick list before you go. Think of yourself as a one-person library, or a short-term Santa Claus, and dole out some goodies on your way out of town.
