While most bands' careers don't last nearly as long as...a regular person's career...Pearl Jam seem to have slipped through some music industry loophole and the band is still alive and kickin' to this day. Pearl Jam have always been known for their activism in addition to music. I remember wanting to see them when I was growing up but not being able to because they were busy boycotting Ticketmaster. Or at least that's what my high school friends told me. The band is still speaking their mind on issues outside of music.

In 2006, the band pledged to donate $100,000 to several different groups that all focus on dealing with climate change, renewable energy, and other environmental issues in order to help offset the carbon emissions they release when on tour.

The band has also donated money in the past to help preserve a rainforest in Madagascar.

The group works hard to respect the environment at every opportunity possible so it seems. Their green efforts even spill over into their lyrics with environmental messages present in some of their songs. Guitarist, Stone Gossard, has gained media exposure for his green-minded lifestyle. He made headlines awhile back for helping to plant vegetation in a Seattle park that had been overtaken by English Ivy. Pearl Jam's drummer, Matt Cameron, has a history of playing social and eco-benefit shows.

If you like Pearl Jam, go ahead and support them! You can do so with a clean conscience because this band always goes above and beyond to make sure they're helping out planet. Keep up to date with them through their Myspace and check out their tour dates at Pollstar.
