Ever feel like nobody understands your inclination towards environmentalism? Do you feel like sometimes you're surrounded by unwarranted hostility just because you've placed a premium on making green progress? Well, take heart—there are plenty of fictional characters who can relate (there are plenty of real ones too, of course, but they're not as dramatic). Without further ado, here are the top 5 misunderstood green villains:

  1. Lex Luther: In the most recent Superman film, you may remember Lex Luther's "maniacal" scheme-using some mysterious formula, he attempted to create an obscene amount of land, which he would ostensibly own. But with the effects of climate change growing at a rapid clip, and sea levels rising, we just might need all the land we can get. Even if we'd have to pay through the nose for it. See, the crazy old evil genius was really only trying to counteract the effects of global warming. And Superman had to go and ruin everything.

Capitalistic minded green initiatives, though perhaps suspicious-seeming to the public and superheroes, can benefit the environment.

  2. Frankenstein's Monster: Himself the product of a macabre recycling project, Frankenstein's monster has got to be one of the most misunderstood villains in history. We seem to have lost sight of the fact he only sought love and companionship—the poor old disgustingly recycled guy. Serves for a good green parable though: we gots to respect the stuff we create with our fancy modern technology, even if it's ugly as hell. Otherwise it'll kill everyone we love and then bury itself under a glacier. Okay, maybe not that last part.

Green Lesson: Respect green and recycled goods, even if they look odd.

  3. King Kong: What's a peaceful, jungle-loving ape to do when he's trapped in a cage and then let loose in a concrete jungle? I know that Kong's not the villain per se, as we all can't help be sympathetic to the giant gorilla. But he was just green as can be in his natural environment—living in a weird jungle where gigantic apes were necessary to balance out the food chain. When he goes berserk and climbs the Empire State Building, he's only acting instinctively and naturally; he is a monkey after all. But us humans had to drag him down and kill him—I guess there's just no place for giant green gorillas in the modern urban world.

Green Lesson: We should do our best to protect and preserve nature. And humongous otherworldy apes.

  4. Doctor Octopus: A brilliant nuclear physicist, Dr. Octavius could well have performed the clean energy industry an invaluable service with his radiation-resistant mechanical arms. Unfortunately, an accident in the lab left his arms inextricably grafted onto his body, and they drove him insane. Too bad-he probably could've figured out a way to safely dispose of nuclear waste.

Green Lesson: Don't judge the eco-ambitious, and cut them some slack if they seem weird. Unless they're vandalizing the city with mechanical octopus arms.

  5. Dracula: Talk about a carbon neutral nemesis. Dracula flies without emitting any greenhouse emissions, produces no waste (pretty sure vampires don't poop), and all around lives an entirely sustainable life. Plus, all the humans he converts to vampirism will never need to use vehicular transportation again!

Green Lesson: Those who live super sustainable lifestyles might appear strange to some of us. But be nice to them. And it never hurts to keep a little garlic and a cross handy.
