California is the world's eighth largest economy. The unemployment rate in that state is around 10%. The recession is serious business. Most experts believe we still have a year to go before we hit bottom, so hold onto your socks. Hopefully, the green sector will be given a chance to bloom during these trying times. President Obama has promised to create 5 million new green jobs. We can only hope they get here sooner rather than later.
There are still untaken jobs out there. That's the good news. The bad news is that there are about 4 times the people vying for each job. It's all a numbers game. That means all you have to do is apply over and over and over again. I lost my job as an editor at the beginning of this recession and spent a few months trying to get back on my feet. I went on copious amounts of job interviews and worked as a film extra to make ends meet. I know how rough it is out there.
The other good news is that the green job market is a growth sector. And if Obama meets his 5 million green job goal, it might be a good idea to get your foot in the door now. There are good jobs out there with good pay. You'll also be making a difference in the world. You can't ask for much else.

Environmental Careers
One of the jobs featured on Environmental Careers.com, as of the writing, is the Climate Change Director for the World Wildlife Federation. How cool would it be when someone asked you what your job was and you could say, "I'm a climate change director." People would literally tremble before you. Then you'd explain what the job was, and they'd be impressed.
