Short for "ecological credibility," this term can bring out the best or worst in us. According to the Urban Dictionary, one gains eco-cred by "exhibiting behaviors that suggest a commitment to the environment. Driving a hybrid car gives you eco-cred. Riding a bicycle to work gives you MAJOR eco-cred. Recycling cans, plastic and newspaper gives you very little eco-cred, but recycling your neighbor's trash by digging through it to find recyclable products gains you lots of eco-cred."
But much like the oft-sought street cred, eco-cred can be tricky to judge. From corporate greenwashing to individuals fronting, there are no shortage of examples. Perhaps, when seeking to assess eco-cred, we should channel JFK and ask not what our eco-system can do for us but rather what what we can do for our eco-system. Remember, the earth doesn't need posers. It needs doers.
Test your eco-cred here by answering simple questions like: "Choosing organic, in-season fresh produce is good for the planet. Which of the following methods for preparing that produce is another good eco-friendly idea?"
