Try some of these factoids on for size: A book is published somewhere in the world every 30 seconds. Over 4 gallons of water are used to create a single book. The pulp and paper industry ranks third on the list of largest industrial greenhouse emitters. Forty percent of landfilled solid waste is paper. And finally: 81 percent of Americans feel they should write a book (insert deep sigh here).
Even with the durability of our beloved books, it's clear that we have to turn the page on traditional publishing practices. The greening of publishers has begun but another approach involves the e-book. Short for "electronic book," an e-book is "the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. Such documents are usually read on personal computers, or on dedicated hardware devices known as or e-book devices. Many mobile phones can also be used to read eBooks."
Of course, electronic devices bring their own set of eco-concerns so read up on how to green your book buying and look into free books online, too.
