Nothing brings people together like screaming over a game of Taboo that hand gestures are not allowed or that "zoot" is not a word according to the Scrabble dictionary. But board games tend to take up a lot of space and are not exactly Spartan when it comes to packaging. There are plenty of ways to enjoy a greener game night with your family or friends.
- Like cereal, you can now get games in a bag. BagGames packs pieces for chess, checkers, or backgammon and a full-sized cloth board into one small bag with a tie to prevent everything falling apart should you drop the bag. Its portability is great. The Green Games Eco-Friendly seal of approval? Even better.
- For games with eco-content as well, try Adventerra Games, which has created eco-educational games with charming graphics.
- Also, fun, for Monopoly nuts are knock-offs themed around the ocean, gardening, farms and animals.
Feeling like a little DIY? Why not make your own game?
- Don't have chess, checkers, or Scrabble and love it? Build your own board from salvaged wood or, if you're not comfortable with the sander, use an old bed sheet or corkboard and fabric markers. Pieces can be made out of old tiles (for Scrabble, you can cut the alphabet from old magazines and glue on), wine corks, or whatever you have handy that's fairly small and easy on the fingerpads.
- Know all the Taboo cards by heart? Have your friends make five cards each (word and forbidden clues) and bring to game night.
- Old marbles or buttons and an egg carton, Mancala!
- Yahtzee! You just need some dice, a cup and some paper.
- Cut faces from magazines and glue to index cards to make your own Guess Who? people.
