Whether you're forwarding your friend something hilarious from Youtube, or CC'ing your boss on your latest proposal, you're probably sending out emails all of the time, and for a lot of different reasons. I mean, I certainly am. Now, given, I'm a blogger, so I'm going to have a lot of email to deal with during my day, but even if you're not a blogger, you probably have a lot of email to deal with, too, especially if you're the kind of person who's reading this sentence on the web.
So, what if I told you that you could use each and every single one of those emails to help save the planet? Now, what if I told you that all you needed to do in order to make that happen was simply add a sentence or two to your email signature? Cool, right? Check out these three ideas for email signatures that can spread the green word, and help spur your friends and co-workers into eco-action.
- Think Before You Print This Email
There's nothing quite like getting a green idea right in front of the person who needs to think about it, right at the moment when they need to think about it. Encouraging people to think twice before printing out what you've just sent them is an almost ridiculously appropriate green idea. No wonder it's a top email signature of choice around Treehugger HQ. - A Favorite Green Tip
Whether it's something you've read about on Planet Green, or is something from (gasp!) another website or even (shock!) a book or some other non-internet-source, why not pay your favorite easy green idea forward by including it in your email signature? If it's something you learned about online, you could put a link to the page where you discovered it. Or, just write a quick sentence or two summing up the easiest eco-tip you can think of. It's kind, and green, to share something you've learned with your colleagues and comrades, who might not be so well-informed. - Your Green Resolution
If you're taking on a green challenge, like sticking to the 100-mile diet for a month, or you've made a green resolution, like biking to work more often, spread the word by putting it in your email signature! You can update it as you make progress, sort of like a Twitter feed, to inspire and motivate others to follow your lead. It's easy to talk about green until you're blue in the face, but sharing something that you're actually doing can be very exciting. Think about how effective it will be for people to read something like "To reduce my carbon footprint, I've biked to work for 16 days in a row. Why not join me?" and then get another email a bit down the road that says something like "To reduce my carbon footprint, I've biked to work for 37 days in a row. Why not join me?" It makes green feel do-able, concrete, and totally personal.
