"Don't be a punk, pass a clean energy bill and create some green jobs."

Those aren't the official talking points, but they sum up a campaign from the guys in Green Day and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The two groups, one music and one environmental
, teamed up a few years back to encourage fans of the band and the Earth to call on Congress to pass legislation to deal with climate change.

A web site for the campaign includes a letter generator and videos from the band. The newest video references President Obama.

The Green Day-NRDC campaign also aims to raise money for the environmental group, and donations of $10 or more will get you a dogtag, made of recycled metal and designed by Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong and his wife Adrienne.

Jordan Kessler, with NRDC, says the collaboration has helped his group collect thousands of signatures for a petition to senators at concerts on the band's current tour, in places like Chicago, Los Angeles, San Jose, New York and Washington, D.C.

"Currently, our list of fans turned activists is more than 20,000 people," Kessler said.

More than 1,000 people also are wearing those dogtags as a result of the project.
