Going green can seem like a daunting challenge. It requires breaking old habits such as letting your car idle or drinking bottled water. You have to be responsible with your purchases, car maintenance, house and anything that uses energy or impinges upon the environment. Keeping track of all that information can truly be a dizzying task.

To counteract green anxiety, why not go green with a friend? Use the buddy system. The buddy system is utilized by firefighters and swimmers to aid and protect each other while undertaking risky ventures. When a "buddy" feels compelled to shirk or cheat on his or her newfound green lifestyle, the other "buddy" can set him or her straight. This system works for runners and dieters, and it can work for you.

Undertaking a new lifestyle can be intimidating. Amongst every group or subculture there are elitists and snobs who can make you feel like a poser or a newbie. Just look at those people who work at record stores. They are perfect examples.

A friend can counteract the harsh or condescending words of self-appointed "green gatekeepers." A buddy by your side will boost your confidence and keep your sights focused on the big picture.

There are no rules for going green. It isn't a club or a social group. It can feel like a subculture, but it is not. It's an honest, straightforward way to conserve the planet for future generations. So go green as soon as possible and don't worry about the elitists. They're just insecure.

Get a friend to go green with you. Share each other’s trials and tribulations. They will be easier to overcome if you use the buddy system.
