ShipTogether
READ MORE ABOUT:
Ever buy stuff on Amazon? Sure you do. Want to get free shipping on every order you make, and help cut down on packaging waste and delivery truck emissions while you do? Indeed.
The best part is, despite the semi-sleazy adman lingo used to entice you with up there in the lede, it's completely free and it's exceedingly simple to do. In fact, it's a Facebook application. And what's simpler than using Facebook apps? The answer is nothing. Nothing is easier than using a Facebook app, except perhaps simply staring at the Facebook homepage.
Free Shipping on Amazon
The app, called Ship Together, is fueled by an amazingly simple idea—to pool local orders together in order to qualify for Super Saver shipping, and coordinate shipping and receiving times amongst the members to make for easy item-gettin'.
If you've ever used Amazon, you probably already know that if you buy more than $25 worth of stuff, you qualify for free shipping. But there are plenty of times when you only want a single book or CD or get well card or knee sock or whatever the hell it is you buy on Amazon these days (is there anything they don't sell anymore?). In which case, you either take a hit and blow a few bucks on shipping fees, or convince yourself to buy an extra item that you're not wild about just to qualify for the Super Saver. Either way, you blow extra money, and potentially send some unwanted stuff to the landfill.
And that's where Ship Together comes in. If you're already on Facebook, just download the app, and hook up with other Amazon users in your area. The app will help you coordinate orders, and before you know it, voila! Free shipping, and a new Amazon-usin' buddy you can online shop with.
It's one of those great, why-didn't-anyone-already-think-of-that ideas that was cooked up by Ram Ravichandran, a PhD student in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He tells me that in a poll at CMU, a full 30&perc; of Amazon users admitted to buying extra stuff to meet the $25 free shipping mark.
Let's hope his intuitive app puts a stop to that. Download the app at Ship Together.
