On December 11, the Captain Planet Foundation will honor Ed Begley, Jr., as a Superhero for Earth. The foundation, named after Ted Turner's eco-crusading cartoon hero, listed Ed's role as an environmental leader in Hollywood and his ongoing involvement with numerous causes and organizations working to clean-up the planet as their motivation for bestowing the recognition.
Of course, anyone who watches Ed on Planet Green's Living With Ed, knows that he goes above and beyond what is common among green celebrities. Whether he's taking out the recycling, growing food, washing his clothes, or hitting the gym, Ed shows that it doesn't matter if you're in the City of Angels or the middle of nowhere: There are still simple things we can all do to go green.
Clearly, Ed is all about going hands-on and making a difference any way he can. This attitude runs parallel to that of the Captain Planet Foundation, which seeks to:
Encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities.
Sometimes, doing this requires getting your hands dirty. That has never stopped Ed, and it's part of what makes him such a popular green role-model.
