Every week in our Eco Memo series, we offer you practical tips on how to green your work life. This week, try a cool new tactic that makes green more fun for you and a colleague.
Greenmatching lets you double your eco-impact, and have more fun on the job, while motivating your green lifestyle. If you've ever listened to a public radio pledge week, you've heard of matching grants, which is what they call it when a big donor, like a corporation or philanthropy fund, says "For every dollar a listener gives you, I'll donate a dollar to match it." It works because people give more when they know they're earning their station twice the cash, just by showing that they care. Greenmatching is the same basic idea, except not just for money.
When you ask a colleague to greenmatch you, you're asking them to match your commitment to simple eco-smart actions. For example, you can both pledge to bike to work twice a week to cut your carbon footprints, or recycle at your desk, or forgo the elevator and take the stairs every Friday morning. Whatever green promise you choose to make, you're more likely to keep it when you know that your buddy is sticking to the same goal. By greenmatching, you just might get your coworker to take an eco-friendly action that they wouldn't otherwise think of trying, and you'll definitely have more fun at work when you're greening your daily grind with a partner.
