Each year, TreeHugger and Planet Green gear up for what could be considered the most popular eco-time of the year, Earth Day. Though we’ve partnered up with Green Apple Festival in the past, this year will be its biggest (scaling across ten U.S. cities) and most interactive thanks to its partnership with Earth Day Network and its focus on environmental volunteerism.

And with volunteer vacations all the rage—and Obama’s recent call to service a very hot topic—little else seems more appropriate this Earth Day. Peter Shapiro, Green Apple Festival’s co-founder and executive producer even says,

The tide has turned on people sitting by and waiting for their leaders to act alone in providing a brighter, cleaner future. In keeping with the Obama administration's call to service, we're looking forward to a nationwide collaboration this year between community leaders, environmental organizations and Americans everywhere making an important impact and setting the stage for 2010’s global events.

To do just this, from April 17 through 19, eco-volunteer projects based around fighting climate change will simultaneously take place in each of the participating cities: New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Leading environmental organizations in tandem with city parks and recreation departments will help organize everything from tree planting and energy efficiency retrofitswater conservation and urban garden growing and forest restoration. It definitely seems as though there’s a project to compliment anyone’s eco-interests this Earth Day.

As an added perk to those donating their time, Green Apple Fest will thank volunteers with music concerts spanning all cities on April 19. The artists are yet to be announced but if there anything like last years, we can expect some big names on the bill. What better a reward for restoring Mama Earth than shakin’ it to some good ol’ rock n’ roll?

If you’ll be in or around one of the ten participating cities this Earth Day, join the volunteer festivities by browsing our premiere Volunteer Database and signing up for your eco-project of choice. In NYC alone, you can find recycling initiatives, green roof installation, horticulture, beach clean-up, urban gardening and tons more.

The cut-off date is April 15 so act fast!

And keep up-to-date on all things Earth Day overload here at Planet Green! We’ll be dishing out tons of articles, events, concert coverage and more.
