If you will be in the Washington, DC, area on April 19, 2009, head over to the National Mall to celebrate with an expected crowd of thousands. Earth Day on the National Mall 2009 is an event organized by the Earth Day Network and will kick off the Green Generation Campaign. With a full schedule of guest speakers and exhibitors, this event is one that you certainly don't want to miss.

Especially since the announcement that the Flaming Lips will be headlining the event. Other musical acts will include Los Lobos and DJ Spooky.

Chevy Chase will act as emcee for the event, introducing the musicians and other guests. Speakers that have already confirmed their attendance include: Matthew Modine, John and Kate Plus 8, Representative Edward Markey, Majora Carter, Earth Day founder Denis Hayes, and Renovation Nation's Steve Thomas. In addition, an "eco-roadshow" will showcase dozens of non-profits, green companies, and activism organizations. Exhibitors will include Planet Green, Clear2Go, the Environmental Protection Agency, Zumbox, and many more.

In addition to the speakers and exhibitors, the event will mark the beginning of Green Generation , a multi-year campaign that will build up to the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. Modeled after the ideal of the "Great Generation," the group of citizens responsible for rebuilding the country after World War II, the "Green Generation" will consist of action-oriented individuals, working together to forge a healthier and more environmentally friendly future. Like Earth Day on the National Mall 2009, the Green Generation is open to everyone, regardless of age or nationality, with the intention of building a diverse green-minded community.

Get started by getting your hands dirty volunteering for the Green Apple Festival. Several projects in the DC area are still open, but registration ends on April 15, so act now.
