Every Monday in our Eco Memo series, we offer you practical tips on how to green your work life. This week, learn how to cut some carbon while running your workday errands.
Let's face it: as much time as you and your co-workers spend at your desks, there is always going to be something that you need to run out for. Whether you need a super-grande-extra-caramel-skim-mochacino to get you through that next big meeting, a bottle of whiskey to get you through the meeting after that one, or are just taking an emergency trip to Super Office Supply Maximum Everything Superstore for highlighters and stuff so that you can get some actual work done, sometimes you've gotta get out of your desk chair, jump in the car and hit the road for supplies during the course of the day.
The next time you're heading out on an errand, take a quick stroll through your office first to see if any of your colleagues need something that you can pick up on your rounds. If you can get Tim's donut and Jane's soda on your way back from obtaining your urgently needed coffee/booze/pencils, you'll keep Tim and Jane from needlessly burning gas. There's no reason for all three of you to increase your carbon footprints http://science.howstuffworks.com/carbon-footprint.htm by each driving a solo round trip on the same stretch of road, so do a kindness for your colleagues and for Mother Earth by making a couple of errands happen in a single swoop. Your co-workers will surely appreciate your thoughtfulness, and it's an easy way to be green. Plus, it's always nice to have people owe you a favor.
