No matter what sort of place of business I enter, it seems as though there is, invariably, a water cooler. And where there is a water cooler, there are dixie cups. You can count on it.
I hate dixie cups. I just don't understand the purpose they serve. Granted, when a visitor comes into a business, it's not fair to assume that person will have their own cup on them for the water from the cooler. Some courses of action can be taken, however, to reduce the amount of waste created from dixie cups.
If your place of employment embraces the water cooler concept, you can help to make it greener for everyone. Encourage your colleagues to have their own cups at their desk. Not only is this helpful for coffee runs, but it's helpful for water refills, too. Using up one of those cups for each round to the water cooler doesn't make any environmental sense.
Help make this one change at your job and you'll do a lot of good.
Think your bosses won't be behind this? Well, they should be. If you have a run-in with a supervisor about encouraging the use of permanent cups, try pointing out the fact that using fewer dixie cups=saving money. During these tough economic times, this should be an eco-action that even the most eco-unfriendly can stand behind.
If your office does continue to supply the water cooler with dixie cups, move to have them at least be the kind that are made from recycled paper.
