This past Christmas, my dad asked for a digital picture frame. My mom went on and on about how silly she thinks these new gadgets are, but I had to beg to differ with her on the topic. Most obviously, digital picture frames are convenient. Someone like my dad, who works in an office, only has so much desk space to work with. If you're spending 40+ hours at a desk, why not surround yourself with multiple pictures of your loved ones instead of just a few? It makes enough sense to me. But how eco-friendly are these frames?
We have to take the environmental factor of production into account here. Creating something new usually tolls the environment in one way or another. Nonetheless, some new items are worth the investment because of the resources they can save in the future. Digital picture frames are one of these items, saving the resources that are depleted through photo printing, but what about the electricity they consume?
Most digital picture frames run on about 9-11 watts of power and even on standby, they use .45 watts of power. A standard photo frame uses no power whatsoever.
So which is more green?
If you're going to get dozens upon dozens of pictures printed and if you're going to keep them all in brand new frames, it may just be more environmentally friendly for you to make the investment for a single digital picture frame. If we're talking about a modest amount of framed pictures in your home, however, my advice is to print the pictures yourself on recycled photo paper and utilize second-hand or eco-friendly frames for the pictures.
