Bright, young minds seeking ways to get their awesome green ideas on the international scene, look no further.
The Institute for the Future (IFTF), a non-profit research group who focuses on forecasting trends that will transform the global community and marketplace, in conjunction with Sun Microsystems and Boing Boing, has created a forum for you. It comes freshly delivered in the form of a competition called the Digital Open.
Running now until August 15, youth under the age of 17 can submit text, photos and video projects under a variety of topics from media to community and of course—the environment—all licensed under free and open source domains. This free, open source theme lives at the core of the contest, encouraging entrants to collaborate, communicate and share ideas. It’s sort of like a high school science fair, only online.
The environment submission category, dubbed Open Earth, is described on the website as such:
Open Earth projects address issues concerning the health and well-being of our planet. You could use open technology to capture and harness a form of alternative energy, measure and visualize carbon footprints, or come up with a way to better support eco-friendly transportation, like bikes, trains, and hybrid vehicles. Or maybe you have a green thumb and want to apply technology to an organic gardening or farming process. Open Earth projects will help us to preserve our planet for many future generations to enjoy.
As if inventing a new and exciting eco-friendly contraption or concept isn’t a prize in and of itself—there are some excellent prizes in store.
In addition to getting millions of eyes on their project on Boing Boing, winners will also score a technology prize pack including a PeeCee mini laptop, a video camera, and a solar-powered flashlight. Groovy!
And if Graham Hill, the mastermind behind TreeHugger, approves. So do we. He’s one of the contest judges!
