The entries are in for a sustainable design competition and it's up to readers' votes to determine the winner: will it be an online farmer's market, a community seeds project, a vertical gardening system for urban areas, a device that allows for indoor gardening anytime of year—or any of the other 17 great ideas that were submitted.
The Digging Deeper competition, based in San Francisco, sought models for an urban agricultural product, system, retrofit, service model or communication campaign that is easy to set up and implement or distribute, citing key areas of need as seasonal food education, access to food growing, and ways to create awareness about the origins of food.
Some seriously awesome ideas were submitted: a mini-structure so that you can grow plants indoors (without soil), and do it vertically so that you aren't wasting much of (if you live in a city) precious apartment space. A mobile market that would unite the freshness and sustainability of farmer's market food with the convenience of prepared street food. A platform for sharing space and resources so that urban agriculture can really take off—so someone with a large yard but no time can connect with someone who has the time and gardening know-how, but no yard. Everyone wins!
Check out all 21 entries for yourself, and think carefully before submitting your vote.
