Start a Communal Fruit Basket at Work

Eating actual fruit is a bit greener than drinking juice-spread the word!

The office can easily become a place of routine. Everyone gets their coffee or juice in the morning, does something predictable for lunch, etc. Helping to make your office green can be a whole lot easier if you work to make some of these routines a little greener.

The green routine I propose to you and your office:

Create an office fruit basket to replace all of the juice and coffee (or at least cut it down).

  • Apples, for instance, are a natural energy booster and can easily replace coffee. (Which isn't always organic, fair trade, or smartly packaged.)

  • Oranges are usually a better choice than orange juice. They contain more fiber and less junk!

  • Juice can be good sometimes; sure. But often times, it's not as good for you, or the planet, as you'd like to think. From added ingredients to packaging, the actual fruit is usually the greener choice compared to juice. If you're going to drink juice, support the companies that are working hard to make organic juice that is actually made from fresh fruit. What's even better, however, is to squeeze your own juice from fruit. My point is this: juice is a product that mandates packaging and, in many cases, added ingredients, and whole fruit doesn't do either of these things—at least not to the same degree.

Your challenge: Bring a basket into work with some fruit in it and encourage your colleagues to do the same and share with one another. Every little green thing counts!
