Celebrate World Water Day with the rest of the world on Saturday, March 22, by stopping to consider the natural resource we often take for granted. One in five people around the globe doesn't have access to safe drinking water, while two in five lack access to improved sanitation services, according to the United Nations, which launched the event in 1992. By 2025, the organization notes, close to 2 billion people will be living in regions with severe water scarcity.
The preciousness of water hit closer to home in 2007, when much of the southeastern United States was faced with unprecedented drought conditions, resulting in local and regional conflicts over water supplies.
If you haven't already, calculate your personal water footprint to find out if you're a sipper or a guzzler. Meanwhile, why not use the weekend to take care of leaky faucets, as well as install H2O-saving faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads? (As a bonus, you'll save some moola, too.) Consider building a rain barrel or downspout bog garden, as well, to capture rainwater and reduce storm runoff. And if you're on a roll, take the opportunity to check if your washing machine and dishwasher are up to snuff, water-wise. Don't forget to bone up on our other water-saving tips, from the basic to the advanced, to make every day World Water Day.
