We may not have gotten the governmental action we were looking and hoping for from Copenhagen—but now that the Senate has the health care bill out of the way, our representatives in DC have the perfect opportunity to fully focus on strong climate change legislation.
Taking action
Trying to speed things along, the environmental network 1Sky has organized a National Senate Call-In Day today, encouraging people to call their Senators (because calls are more noticeable than emails) and tell them they want the climate to be made a priority. The most critical issue, according to 1Sky, is to defeat the Murkowski Amendment, which would strip the EPA of its power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions—and with it, the U.S. government of any serious ability to act on climate change.
So. If you don't want to see that happen and you can find a few extra minutes in your day today, pick up the phone and call your Senators. Check out 1Sky's phone tips for making your call, and use them—or not, and use your own tricks. But have a little patience—the goal is to flood the Senate with calls so if the line is busy, just hang up and try again. A clean energy future will be worth the effort.
