Some things look better in the dark. Like the earth, at 8:30pm, on March 29th. This year's Earth Hour is being touted as a showdown between Earth and global warming: The blacker the night on March 28th, the more clearly the world will have shown their awareness of the issue...by not showing anything at all.
The idea began in Sydney in 2007, and the rest of the world noticed after 2.2 million of the city's residents took part. In 2008, it went global with 50 million participants (Canada especially went gaga for the thing. Thank you, Canada, for your Earth Hour support and your poutine. But we're still upset about the narwhals). Businesses like Coca Cola, McDonald's and hotels were major participants, and even the Golden Gate Bridge and the Sydney Opera House got in on the fun.
Currently there are over 1000 cities and towns signed up to flick the switch in 2009. If you're in the US, you can sign up here. And don't just sign up—see the website for more ideas on how to spread the love, and the darkness, on March 29.
A few ways to get started:
- Network: Tweet, Facebook, and MySpace about Earth Hour. Talk: Tell people about it. Tell them to tell other people about it! Lobby: Write to your Senator or Congressman asking for swift action on climate change. The Earth Hour automated system makes it easy.
- Write: A letter to the editor of your local newspaper and ask your community to turn out for Earth Hour.
- Link: Your website to EarthHourUS.org
- Share: The sweet Shepard Fairey "Vote Earth" digital poster around.
- Organize: An Earth Hour "Lights Out" party
